Herbert V. Rachelson grew up in Long Beach, N.Y. He attended Oberlin College in Ohio. In 1965 he went to Belgium and attended medical school at the Catholic University of Louvain. After graduation in 1971, he did a rotating internship at St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital in Montreal Canada. Then it was back to New York for his residency on general and orthopaedic surgery at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, in New Hyde Park, N.Y.
Doctor Rachelson joined the Indian Health Service in 1975 and moved to Gallup, N.M. He worked at the Gallup Indian Hospital for two years while participating in the residency program of the Department of Orthopaedic at the University of New Mexico.
In 1977 he started a private practice in Taos, New Mexico, where he has been living and working since then. He specialized in ski and sports injuries with special interest in surgery of the hand.
In June of 2000, Doctor Rachelson joined the Academy Orthopaedic Clinic in Albuquerque. His special interest in hand surgery adds to the scope of practice of our clinic and is of great benefit to the patients in our community.
